Like every year, the thaw period causes damage to roads in the Canton de Hatley, particularly gravel roads. On asphalt roads, it’s peak season for potholes. Traffic may therefore be more difficult in some areas. The public works team is actively working to maintain the safety of the road network and is monitoring road conditions. Temporary repairs are being made to the most problematic areas. Partial road closures may also occur to allow for urgent repairs.
Grading and Resurfacing
Road grading cannot be carried out during the thaw period, as the ground is unstable and saturated with water. This work can begin once the roads have thawed and dried sufficiently.
According to the Ministère des Transports, the thaw period in our region is expected to last from March 16 to May 15, 2026, depending on weather conditions.
Heavy vehicles on municipal territory
The Ministère des Transports reminds users that during the thaw period, load limits for heavy vehicles are reduced on public roads. We ask heavy vehicle users to limit their travel during this period in order to reduce damage to roads. transports.gouv.qc.ca/fr/entreprises-partenaires/ent-camionnage/degel/
Maintaining your culvert
All property owners are responsible for maintaining their culverts to ensure that water can flow freely into the municipal ditch. This is especially important during the spring thaw. With significant rainfall expected this week, we invite you to check your driveway culvert to ensure that it is working properly and is not blocked.
If you notice damage on a road, you can notify the Municipality at 819 842-2977 or via the online form: cantondehatley.ca/en/information/request-or-complaint/
Thank you for your understanding.
